“This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. ... For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more”. By calling this covenant ‘new,’ he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear” (Hebrews 8:10, 12-13 NIV).
THE NEW REPLACES THE OLD
Notice the last part of the verses we just read. It says that the new covenant with Christ has caused the old covenant to be obsolete and outdated. Our conscience is not governed by the law of the old covenant but by the law of the Spirit. When God writes His laws in our hearts and minds, these are the laws that come from our inner being — the fountain of life within. It is our human spirit indwelled by God that writes laws on our hearts. We are no longer governed by externalized religion of the old covenant law, but by the law of the Spirit fed from within our human spirit.
FIGHTING FOR FREEDOM
This was a big debate during the early church and Paul fought furiously for the freedom of believers to ensure that that they did not submit themselves again to the old covenant laws. He explained that the law was simply a guardian until Christ came so that we can then be justified by faith. Once Christ came there was no more need for the law-guardian.
He argued this point in Galatians 3:21, 24-25, “Is the law, therefore, opposed to the promises of God? Absolutely not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law. ... So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.”
GOVERNED BY THE SPIRIT
Your conscience is now governed by the law of the Spirit of life. Your life is regulated by this Spirit-led conscience, “because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death” (Romans 8:2).
ENJOYING A CLEAR CONSCIENCE
You will find that the Holy Spirit will lead you in the path of the righteousness that Jesus has imparted to you. At no point will the Holy Spirit lead you to contradict the Scriptures. Our salvation is true freedom in Christ and not a license for sin or irresponsible behavior.
